Cutting glass is one of the many things I do for a living. You need to use
oil if you want a clean break, and it will also extend the cutter life. If
you don't use oil the edges of the cut will chip (the glass will make a
popping noise before it is snapped and tiny chips of glass will form on the
top). The "production" cutters that you have seen usually require you to
manually apply a lubricant to the glass in the line of the cut with an oil
soaked brush prior to cutting.
