This is standard windows interface stuff, and it also applies to Notepad.

1) Save a file with an extension displayed in the file-save dialog and it is appended to the name displayed in the file name box.
2) Save a file as a file type "ALL", and it will be saved exactly as the name you type in the file name box, including the extension.

3) Open-File dialog shows only those with the same extension as that shown in files of type. Enter *.* in File name & depress tab to see "ALL" files, or select files of type all to display "ALL" files.
