I've certainly never felt the need for a home switch.

As far as limit switches go, rather than two switches on the end of an
axis and a suitable "bump" to trigger them, I use one switch in the
middle of the axis and a "bump" at either end.

Less wiring and neater overall. Also, it's easy to add another "bump"
when the limit changes. ( For example, when the chuck jaws are opened
so wide that they'll strike the table )
