One reason to use separate - + limit switches is that many axis drive
makers allow the - and + to disable further motion in that direction but
the axis will still move in the other direction.

I was referring to LPT s/w-type CNC controls that (IIRC) refer to
having inputs for 3 switches per axis. Do people actually use all
3?
