There is another way, which is to type a command like
xyz >& file.txt
which causes all console (stdout) and error output to be sent to a file.
You can do the command like :
startx >& startx.log
and then when it ends or you shut down X, there will be a file that
you can examine with all the console and error messages in it.
You could use the command :
more startx.log
to read the file, hitting the spacebar will scroll forward the next
page of info, hitting q will quit out of more.
This should allow you to read the error messages, and maybe see
what is wrong.
The console setup program is XF86Setup, I think, for X Free 86.
If you don't have a manual, you will drive yourself crazy with all
these nitpicking details on the names of programs, etc. But, you
will have to run it to configure X windows.
