Bill,

What brand of Linux did you install?

It sounds like xwindows is not configured right or not at all. Did you get
into a screen while installing Linux that asked about your monitor and video
card?

If not, type:

FX86Setup

and the setup for xwindows will appear. Enter you video card type, monitor
specs and endless questions to which you know none of the answers. When
you exit this setup prog, it will try to load a graphics screen which
won't work until you have redone it 15-20 times, making new guesses at
those questions you don't know the answers to. If the graphics screen
hangs, press ctrl, alt, backspace, at the same time. This will bail you
out to the text console so you can type:

FX86Setup

and have the fun all over again.

Be prepared for many more disappointments!
