Jon,
Although I agree with your "subscription" comments (both magazines
and the way the web will likely go), I do NOT want to quit eGroups/
yahoo groups!
This list (although my favorite) is only ONE OF MANY groups I
read/post within the egroups/yahoo system. In fact, I find that I
simply DON'T take the time to go to some of the "other" discussion
lists I used to!!!
Doug,
Terry L Ridder offered (awhile back) to host this list for free. And
recently reminded us that he does so for other lists...
As I said above, I am NOT in favor of this approach.
List,
Maybe it's just me (and my studies of crowd dynamics) but I somehow
trust the corporate "blob" yahoo, MORE than an individual who has
absolute power (NOTE I AM NOT REFERRING TO ANY!!! SPECIFIC
INDIVIDUAL!!). As it has been said, "power corrupts, absolute power
corrupts absolutely!"
I do not use the "free" (web-based) hard drive space offered either.
Just who has access to this info? With a large corporation like
yahoo, you can bet there are 'watchdogs' (to protect the public
interest). A small ISP / list provider??? Who cares?
Hope this helps.

P.S. I created a Web-based (yahoo)email account for the purpose of
these types of groups. I have not had any problems with my yahoo
account; it does a GOOD job of separating the 'spam' into a "bulk
mail" folder.(of which there is little, but I do pay attrention to
where I am going/what I am doing on the net) I often get offlist
questions and comments at this yahoo mailbox.
As far as the ads "issue", it has never been one! By reading online,
I can quickly "get past" any ads (to the point that I now don't even
see 'em!)
To sum up, I have seen NO difference in "spam" or "ads"(yes, I have
been looking recently, since others mentioned it as a problem) since
the yahoo "switch". Only a different Yahoo! Groups password, compared
to my eGroups password...
