Re: [CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO] Re: Has anyone converted a manual Taig Mill to CNC ?

I used 180 in/oz motors from AMSI ($100 ea) and Dan Mauchs 3 axis chopper
board--The motors are 4 volt,2 amp. I'm running the motors at 22 volts and
could probably increase the voltage some as I put extra heat sinks and fan
cooling on the H-Bridge ICs. Dan's board is really nice because it
automatically drops the current down when the motors are idle--I've set them
at 1 amp idle & could probably decrease that a bit but have no problems with
heating so am leaving it as it is. The max speed I've gotten on the motors
in the half step mode is 3200 steps/sec but I've set the max speed in my
software at 2500 steps to keep the torque up. That gives me about 15in/min
max speed on the TAIG mill. As the Z-axis is normally under tension from
its own weight it has little backlash though it could come into play I guess
when making plunge cuts. I didn't actually measure it but it should be
about the same as the X & Y I'd guess. I talked to Forest at Taig tools and
he said 1-2 thousands backlash was the best that could be expected though
there is an adjustment on the nut if it gets sloppy.
Hope this helps.

Lloyd
