I'm currently putting together a stepper input/servo motor drive on a 3 HP mill's X&Y axes. Total cost so far $1300, that includes
new 210 oz. in. continuous motors, Gekko g320 drives, 500 line encoders, surplus transformers for the power supplies, CNCPRO
software, heatsinks and rectifiers. I had the computer, power supply capacitors, timing pulleys and belts.
This mill has recirculating ball bearing ways and ball screws already installed. I over sized the motors so I wouldn't have to
rework the pulleys on the lead screws or buy new belts but from everything I learned 100 in. oz. motors 3:1 or 4:1 should have been
fine (could have saved $426 here).
Apparently you can run EMC(freeware) in stepper output if you want, though the proceees is tic
