Hi Alan:
Sounds like you've got a diamond dresser.
These are used to true and dress grinding wheels.
They are used most often on surface and cylindrical grinders where the
wheels tend to be soft.
They will work on bench grinder wheels but not terribly well.
They cannot be used as cutters.
Diamond points for engraving are studded with diamond particles, either
electrobonded onto a shank, or embedded in a resinoid matrix which is then
bonded to the shank.
They act like grinding points but are capable of cutting very hard
materials.
