A drawing would be helpful... May I suggest using .625 CAST aluminum
plate for the base. The .625 plate has a tighter "flatness" spec
(stock) than either .375 (which I feel is too thin anyway,
structurally) or .500. Cast plate will not be as prone to 'warp' when
used as the machine base, with milling generally on one side and
largely insupported.
Also, my "pet" complaint... If the rails you mention as y are in the
machine BASE, they probably "should" be called X rails. In a bridge
type machine, the moving table axis is almost ALWAYS X! The axis
across the bridge is Y.
