Do you run DOS, Windows or Linux?

For free software, I'd suggest TurboCNC, MastercontrolCNC, and
(don't do Linux/EMC yet)! If those don't meet your needs, you can
move on to some of the commercial ones.

PS: Maybe you want something REALLY SIMPLE just to test the
motors. Although built to demo their own hardware, maybe this
is what you need (but I don't think they say which pins they are toggling):
