Tom,

I have two static 2HP phase converters. They each consist of a box, a
start capacitor, run capacitor, and potential relay. Total cost of
parts (current prices) is about 85 bucks. Grainger or any "motor
house" has the parts. They work well, and one has been in daily use
for 9 years... This experience includes some machines which have been
used connected directly to 3 ph. power, and later (because of moves)
had to use the converters.

There have been previous posts on this list of links to making your
own phase converter(both static and rotary). They are simple and
anyone who is comfortable with basic electricval wiring can build
one, IMO.
Some of the cheap, commercially available static converters eliminate
the run capacitor. This means their motor performance is degraded.

I also have a 15HP rotary converter, but that's another thing... :-)

Hope this helps.
