While this does not address your hardware questions, I would suggest you
take a look at the DRO card that is offered by Camtronics and was designed
by Tom Kulaga. It is an ISA card that uses the USDigital LS7266R1 chip and
includes a Turbo C program that runs in DOS. Low cost (about $60 for the
card, program is free) and can be built as either 2 or 4 axis. Also, very
easy to write custom programs for. I created a QBasic program that reads the
card and logs the inputs to a file for some testing work with the encoder
connected to a torque meter.
