There is no easy way to drive the quill with a ballscrew unless you clamp a
heavy steel plate to the bottom. Or some other method.
I choose a different approach. I fixed the problem of excess quill backlash
by a slight modification to the machine. The modification calls for
replacing the left side pinion shaft flange bearing with an eccentric flange
bearing. The right side of the pinion shaft is machined down and a eccentric
flanged bearing is made to fit the frame bore and the pinion.The eccentric
bearing are then adjusted for zero backlash between the pinion gear and the
quill rack.The worm gear housing is then readjusted for minimum backlash. On
mine I have .0018 backlash. If interested I can email you the instructions
on solving the mill/drill quill backlash problem.
