Well, the tap was available, already broken, nothing to lose.
I was looking at alternatives to thread milling cutters for widest
application (lowest overall tooling cost) and of course looked at lathe
threading tools. I see that they are all offset back away from the
center of the shank. Does that cause any problems?
Might go with an insert type, as I could use that on the lathe as well.
If this prototype turns into production, I'd pop for a full thread mill,
it would pay off quickly in being able to make the thread in one pass.
Right now, since my cheesy tool is hardly optimal, I have to run a
second pass to get a really clean thread. Takes 2 minutes, which isn't
all that bad considering what a 5/8-18 bottom tap would have cost, and
the setup to tap them.

That spreadsheet is clever. Was it a pain to dial in your pitch dia?
