Hi Jon,

I was moving always in one direction to eliminate backlash. i.e. the first
'zero' measurement was only taken after moving the carriage a few
millimetres along the bed in the direction the move would be. This is why I
was so confused by the inconsistent results. I think I'll wait a while until
I have a few more bits of the machine made and then have another go when I
can fix things to the table in a more predictable way. I'm just finishing
off the 'tee' slots in the table so it will be a few days before I start
work on the bearing surfaces (to let the stress out of the steel).
