I have thought of the same thing, a tube as you describe, with a
plastic slider inside it, driven not through a push rod, but via a direct
connection to the table. I was going to try to mount the strip in the same
fashion as Dan did, on a 1/4 square bar inside the tube. I planned on
placing the slit down, so as to help prevent chip entry, and even thought of
trying to shield the slit with some flexible rubber, copying the comercial
units. If you were to use 3/4"x 2" tube, you could probably get away with
making the connection inside the tube, and only pulling the wires out,
inside the plastic slider. By making the slider long relative to the tube,
it should be possible to keep it from tilting in the tube, as should a rigid
mount to the table.
I've got hand sketches of the whole concept, and half the parts ,
but have not yet made one...

<snip>
At the moment I have a piece of 3/4"x1.5"x.125 wall aluminum tubing
I'm planning to slit on a table saw. The idea is to clamp the film
between two strips of aluminum inside that, then make a plastic slider
to hold the HEDS reader module.
Any thoughts on this?
