The EMC does have a "quadrature drive" mode as well as "step and
direction", so it can generate the A & B phase signals you describe. As
Jon pointed out, there's no current provision for driving the "hold" pin
so you'd need to add some external circuitry to take care of that
function (all the drives I've seen that have automatic idle current
reduction do it, well, automatically).

As far as increasing the PWM frequency goes, I'll defer to Mariss and
Jon as they know lots more than me about that kind of stuff.

Question: Are the A & B signals TTL compatible?
