The phantom leg on my rotary inverter (Arco Rotophase) goes as high as 275V
when there is no motor running. It also makes considerably more noise.
Both problems go away when a motor is running. I used to start the motor on
an old Warner-Swasey turret lathe and let it run just to quiet the inverter
down. This might also work with VFD systems if over-voltage is a problem.
On the other hand, many 5hp VFD's are also rated for 3hp single phase. If
3hp is enough you can skip the rotary inverter and save some money.
