Hi,

Here is a few words on linux and internet:

I am having some trouble my self, - trying out some network
programming. A linux box can do allmost anything, but there is a
problem with networking: - there is "zillion" ways to set the box
up. It is complicated because no other box have so many options. It
can be hard to figure out what to choose, and all the parts that
needs to be set up.

I use some special scripts, - and had lot of problems until I got it
working. If you look in /usr/doc/HOWTO, you find a lot of info as
what you can do, but it can very easy get complicated. What I am
about to say, - is something I have not tried myself, - but it looks
like the easiest way to do it:

In RedHat, you may find the "Network Configurator". This works in
X, and you should find it on the control panel. ( If this is not
enabled, then goto =>programs => administration , and you should
find it. If not install the package )

An X window opens, and on the top you find buttons: Names, Hosts,
Interfaces, Routing.

Click Interfaces, and a new window will open.
Click the PPP radio button, a new window" create PPP interface" pops
up.
Enter the phone number to your ISP, your login name and password.
Click Customize, and you have a new window
Now you will set up the modem:
select - use hardware flow control and modem lines
select - Abort connection on well-known errors
Then select line speed: ? I would try 115200, as this is the serial
line speed between modem and computer. If not try a slower speed.
Then select modem port: ? this could be /dev/cua1 for the first
serial port, cua2 for the next, - or some other devices found in
/dev directory.

Click top button Networking, and
select : Set default route when making connection
select : Restart PPP when connecton fails

Click on top button communication:
Modem init string should be :ATZ
Modem dial command: ATDT
The Phone number should show what you entered earlier, or you may
want to add it again
Then there is a funny looking panel, with expect and send:
Expect Send
ogin: you login name ( ISP )
ord: your password

There may be a time out value too.

Anyway, - the "funny" looking ogin & ord, is a way they use to
identify the Login and Password prompt from the ISP provider.
Because the ISP could send you a string and Login, or login, with
capital letters or small, - ogin will match either. See ?

Finnish with the Done button, - a new window should open - asking
you to save it. Do so.

Ok, with a modem on, you should be able to connect to the world by
returning to the Network Confrigurator and click on the Activate
button, to turn it of click Deactivate.

Now the modem should dial out, and you have to start up a browser, -
like Netscape.

Is there anything I have forgotten ?

Ok, folks - help out if there is something I have forgotten, or
overseen. I am not using this method myself, so I can't help any
further, but it looks like one of the best ways to do it.

NOTE: one problem, - if you don't use a high resolution on your
window system, - then some of these windows that pops up, may be out
of sight. Look around for it.

I think it was Darrell who asked about this, and I hope this would
help. He also had a RH5.1, - and will need the RH5.2, - so if you
get this up on the "air" - then you can download an updated kernel.

Hope this might help.
