One possibility for software is the EMC -- Enhanced Machine Controller.
This is public domain software written by NIST (National Institute of
Standards and Technology and others. The EMC will run on many PC's and
control steppers directly from the parallel port. It will also run servo
motors using an add in board or the EPP stuff from Jon E. and Matt. For
