What you describe is a better system of gibs than the system with three or
four screws and nuts. On the machine you have, the gib strips are actually
stiff wedges and the slot in the side of the saddle is not parallel to the
ways. The way you adjust the gibs is by moving the wedge in or out of its
slot. If you look closely, you will see that one end of the gib strip is
narrower than the other. If you slacken off the screw at this end and
tighten the screw at the other end, you will take up any slack. Every time
you adjust them you have to slacken one screw and tighten the other -
finally tightening both screws against the gib to stop it sliding about and
making the slide stick.
