Looks like another case of ebay 'buzzword' abuse. Typical example
"CNC/LATHE/MILL/SERVO stepper motor" which if you bother to click on
it typically shows a picture of something out of a 5.25" disk drive...

As for cheap linear encoders, there are the strips from US digital.
My 34" enclosed slot-driven encoder is nearly done... I think I will
have about half the resolution of a commercial unit at about half the
cost... If I were to do it again I might just buy a ready made unit
and save a lot of time.
