The linear strip is $2/inch from 7-34 inches at www.usdigital.com.
Readhead is about $25. Then you need a way to mount it. I used 1x2"
AL tube and machined a slider to cary the readhead out of UHMW
plastic. Then you need to slit the tube... Or actuate it via a
pushrod through the end like Dan Mauch did. I came out around $200
for parts by the time I bought everything including some design
mistakes, damaged strip that will probably need to be replaced, etc
and it's still not finished.

I was comparing to about $450 or for a scale in the MSC catalog.

Neither price includes something to read the scale... There is an ISA
card for a PC available done by Tom Keluga which Dan Mauch carries in
kit form, although I am still using a crude homegrown version of the
circuit. If you want a commercial display, ENCO has packages of 9 and
40-odd inch scales with a readout for around a thousand in their web
sale flyer.
