Hi gang, recently i stripped a ball screw out of an old D+D screw machine. i had some experience with ball screws and thot that the shaft was hardened some and the races and outer surface was left quit hard. well this shaft i am able to scratch the race area with a piece of hot rolled steel. the reason the machine was scrapped was 2 fold, first the computer didnt like the air controls in the same box and that one of the 2 ball screws went bad. the ball screw went bad because of slop in a servo tach (2 gears with spring between them) gear was stuck together instead of taking out the backlash. however the balls were ok, but the races were flared out till the balls simply slid over them...obviously it looked to me as if the shaft was way too soft?? I didnt find and mfg. name on only some had etched numbers....Hmmmm????
any ideas? thanks brian f.
