Actually, the biggest challenge is finding the code that does what you
are interested in. Once you have the right file and find the code,
modifying the EMC source is usually not too hard.

If I remember correctly, the handling of MDI and auto modes is
actually quite seperate. It's also possibly (but unlikely) that the
functions used to read data from the terminal and a file handle the
marginal number (- without a digit) differently. OTOH, it is also
possible the exact same function is used in both cases with some sort
of piping from the appropriate source.
