by bedrock only, then a couple of years putting a floating building on the
platform, entirely enclosed by an outer building, to remove atmospheric
vibrations from the air in the inner building. Then, build a really nice
laser optics lab, with an optical bench made from a slab of granite 2 feet
thick by 4 feet by 12 feet. Then, set up the laser optics to make evenly
spaced fringes of red laser light across a span of 4 feet or so, so you can
expose photoresist to pattern your Zerodur (TM) quartz measuring spars.
After all this work, ten years or so, and about $40 million bucks, minimum,
you have successfully made a measuring spar you could buy for about $1200.
Wow, what an adventure, though! Think how much you'd learn!
