Help required stepper is to slow?

Hi all
my stepper is not running fast. its maximim speed is 4000 steps/min.
i mean it runs only 20mm/min . not fast. any body know why this is not fast??
sherlin mill has 53oz/in motors they rapid speed is 12inch/min.
i have 100oz/in
