Peter,

That's a photo of my Unimat SL conversion. While I haven't done more than
once touch a Unimat Classic it should be possible to fit direct drive
steppers. I would try to fit NEMA 23's if at all possible. Nema 17 are
borderline, switching to 23's IF needed would entail lots of rework; and
23's are a lot more common. To connect my motors I silver soldered a piece
of 1/4" shaft to the handwheel nut and used a short piece of plastic hose.
An aluminum bracket bolted to the carriage and two 2" long #10 screws
support the motor. Not the most elegant engineering but appropriate for the
overall ridigity of the machine. For yours I would be concerned about the
motor weight tipping or twisting the machine. Keep up your efforts and my
machine won't be the smallest on this list ;)
