Milt:

I understand the part about using TurboCad and Ace converter, especially the
part of using separate layers for each part and then having Ace
automatically put them together in a "chain". I suspect that you can do the
same thing with any program that offers layering capability.

What are you using for your G-Code interpreter? Yeager's CNCPro or something
else? If you draw something in layer 0, and use Ace Converter, does Ace
recognize that there's something in that layer or not? I bought Fred's
$15.00 version of VectorCAD and am learning how to use it. I'll wait until
either I need the 3D stuff or until he comes out with a 32 bit version
before I think about adding Vector's CAM system.

And, as you mentioned, there's the speed of the computer. I'm using a sony
PCG-F430 notebook computer for the drawing, etc. but am planning to use an
old Zenith Z-Star Ex notebook to drive the motors. I've just ordered the
toys to add motors, etc. to my Sherline mill so it'll be a while before I
even try to cut some air, let alone some real metal.

So many toys, so little time

| I just changed over from the MaxNC "Mill" CAM program to Ace
| Converter for my CNC router using TurboCAD v3.01 (my workshop PC is a
| 486 and doesn't like newer CAD programs that eat memory) and wasn't
| getting anywhere until I started creating a separate layer for each
| individual part on a "cutsheet." I cut out around 10 - 15 parts
| (model aircraft stuff) at a time and assign each one a separate layer
| starting at "0". I then tell Ace the order to cut the parts via
| the "Layer...Priority" box, set the release height in the priority
| box and click "Convert" It ruminates a bit and spits out beautiful G-
| Code!
|
| When I was using MaxNC "Mill", I was drawing each part in TurboCAD,
| saving out each part as individual .dwg file, restart in Dos, load
| ACAD r12 (too ignorant to draw from scratch in that monster),
| import .dwg, create joined polyline, save out as individual .dxf
| file, load MaxNC, convert each one to G-Code, load all the files into
| a text editor to splice them together, then cut parts....and I
| thought everybody had to do it that way! You can imagine my ecstacy
| when I found this forum and heard about Ace Converter!
|
| Many thanks to all of you here...I'm learning a lot reading this
| stuff, even if I don't understand over 10 - 20% of it!
