Linear enocder strip

Has anyone mounted the linear encoder strips from US Digital (used
with HP reader heads) on a machine tool such as a lathe?
I bought a piece and plan to attach it to the back of the bed somehow.
Current thought is to clamp it between two pieces of aluminum, hanging
free at the bottow to pass through the reader head. This would then
be covered by some sort of removeable U channel to shield it from
flying swarf. The reader head would be on the lower lip of a J shaped
bracket bolted to the back of the carriage, sticking up inside the
shield to meet the strip.
Sorry if this has already been discussed - I just joined and am only
part way though reading the archives.
