I used the USdigital linear encoders on my lathe also. I used a piece of
1X2 rectangular tubing. The encoder strip is mounted onto a piece of 1/4"
aluminum square stock with 2 mill double sided tape. The linear strip with
square stock is then epoxied into the rectanular tubing . I then made a
slider to hold the encoder head and this was may to clear the 1/4" square
stock.
Then I used 5/16 diameter aluminum tubing to act as a push rod and to carry
the 4 conductor cable. I will email you some pictures of the encoder housing
and parts.
I also have end cap0s that seal the unit. I just finished building one for
my tail stock so that I have all three axis on the DRO on my lathe
