Hi Jon, Ray, Ian and all,
I got Linux and EMC up last night! In Xconfigurator, the first 800x600
and monitors worked just fine! Of course I had to swap back out a "NEW"
256M PC133 memory DIMM in the process, tested fine at first, then hung
the system. Then started failing RAM tests. I got the message and put
back the old 64M.
After Xconfigurator, I selected graphics boot, or something. SUDDENLY
it's up in a GUI on reboot! I had forgotten, or didn't know about
Xwindows! Very much like Windoz! And I thought I may have to navigate
with cd's & ls'! Lots to learn, but I'm enjoying it! So Xwindows is
the "shell" on top of Linux?
And a note to others contemplating Linux and EMC, It's really quite easy
to bring up BDI! Just jump in and do it! I'd skip the "dual boot",
unless you have a REAL need for it, and try to use std. devices.
I thought so. The Linux site:
http://www.linuxcnc.org/handbook/
Is up today (or accessible to me), I've been trying for the last few
days! That's a relief, and should help out a lot!
Imbedded Linux seems to be catching on. I want to look into it for use
in our hand held automotive test computers.
I'll know more after I get EMC configured. That may take a few more
questions. ;>)
Thanks again!
