Thanks Guys

You're talking WAY over my head here; just thought DRO would be nice; easier
to see accurately at my age than the dials. Think I'd be better off
sticking with what I know; as I said my machines are just expensive toys.
Who knows, in a few years DRO may become cheap like I've seen calculators
go.

I remember seeing a pocket sized calculator that added, subtracted,
multiplied and divided advertised for a shocking bargain of only
$99.99!!!!!! Memory in one was unheard of in those days; just having a
digital calculator that would fit in your pocket was something else.

Hi Lew

As david has already pointed out, without scales it is just a doorstop. I do
have a set of encoders with a 15 pin D plug on the end - But after trying to
get a replacement, I have found each manufacturer uses their own pinout and
favoured plug. Some will use a HD 15 pin D, others, a 9 pin D, and also
circular styles are common.
Then there are the different types of outputs - TTL quadrature, 1V sine and
11uA sine waves. To add to the confusion, some scales (like mine) require a
6V
DC supply.
http://www.heidenhain.de has plenty of data on the various output signals
and
connectors of their scales.

So without the scales and/or detailed info about the box - Leave it for some
mug to buy.

If you realy want a cheap DRO - Have a look at Tom Kaluga's card, Dan Mauch
can
supply the card quite cheaply. EMC can also utilise the card if/when you
start
playing with CNC (sorry, had to get the plug in)

Regards, Paul.
