Ernst,
One of the best low cost solutions is to use Rhino 3D for the modeling and
Model Mill for the G code output. Model Mill is about $3,000 and Rhino is at
least $750. This may be more that you want to pay, but is a good
combination.

[If it makes things easier, I still have Rhino for sale at $400. This price
includes a free upgrade to version 1.1, which hasn't been released yet but
is being used in a beta version by people who've bought 1.0.
I'd like to hear more about Model Mill- what are its outstanding features?
I just started selling another g-code translation program in that price
range called Visual Mill, which imports Rhino's 3dm files directly, and
offers things like pocketing, remachining of hills and valleys,
pencil-tracing and simulated tool-path running. You'd want these features
if you're making machine parts in steel.
If you just want an easy-to-use package that generates g-code from 3-d
surfaces imported as DXF or STL files, I've also got DeskProto 2.0 for
$1450. It's excellent for complex contoured prototypes and models. If
you're a full-time student or faculty member, the prices on Rhino and
DeskProto drop by about half. These are the most economical packages I've
found, but I haven't tried BobCad (and I thought they'd raised their price
to about $1000. ]
