EMC runs under the Linux operating system. I really don't think you want to

try running it with less than 16 MB of memory, and 32 MB is highly
recommended.
The memory architecture of the 486 is different from the Pentium.
This was a problem with the earlier versions of the RT-Linux kernel,
but may not be a problem now, as the memory interface to the real time
section is different. A 486 can be made to work, but it is not a very good
choice. It will be totally unacceptable for software-generated step
pulses. It seems a 266 MHz pentium is the absolute minimum there.
