As a slight OT comment:
My step-son (who is into marine biology), is working on a camera system to
slide down a game fishing line, photograph the fish in 3D and give an
accurate weight based on the fish species, with out having to bring the fish
out of the water to weigh it (this normally leading to the death of the
fish)... a computer maps the 3D image to generates a wire frame, then
calculates volume and finally weight based on mass data for that fish
species...
An interesting project...

The Microscribe is a lot more complicated than it looks. This is one
of those situations that if you have to ask you probably can't do it.
You need 4 very high resolution encoders, a way to interface them to
the PC (look at Camtronics web page), precise machining and bearings
and some pretty interesting software to determine where the arm is
based on overlapping polar coordinate calculations.

I needed one an looked into building one last year. I ended up buying
a used one off Ebay. As an alternative do a search on photometrics.
There are some software packages that extract surface data from
digital pictures.
