If I am doing really accurate cuts, I stick a magnetic base indicator on the
carriage and a .0001 indicator against the toolholder. Just mounted a
Travadial on the carriage on my big lathe for longitudinal travel.
It has a wheel that contacts the ways. These things are expensive but work
great. Even used on ebay they usually bring $2-300. I also mounted a 2"
travel indicator on a quick relase clamp that I made on my Monarch 10EE.
