Thanks to Donald and Tim for advice on the above.

I finally opted to drill and tap into the fan heatsink and fitted 4 nylon
extension pillars and a mounting plate. This means that the drive is
supported by the heatsink rather than the other way round (not dissimilar to
Donald's solution). The arrangement leaves clear access to the terminals,
pots,test point and fault LED.
