I remember as a kid, going with my father to the local tip on weekends, to
dump a load of household rubbish and we would more times than not bring home
more than we took (he was big on salvaging/selling copper wire)...the tip
now has scrounging banned due to litigation potential of people hurting
themselves while clambering on the scrap heap... They now have a "Tip
Monitor" that spends his day in a van making sure people don't go
scrounging... the thing is, he scrounges the tip and sells the stuff from
his van to supplement his mega salary... his prices are ridiculous, so the
junk stays there...

Lucky you. Nevada County's dump never really was scrounger friendly, but
up to a couple years ago the metal pile was hidden enough to allow
fairly free scavenging. No more. Makes me want to cry sometimes,
bicycles thrown away because of a flat tire, etc.

Signs posted around the dump announce that it's illegal to trespass
without permission. I'm thinking of writing the county to ask permission
to trespass when they are closed...<G>
