as I don't have any myself to look over. Well I do but they're from model
planes. I saw on a web page that a guy only took one lead from a model
plane's servo to get the feedback. Since the servos and encoders are
seperate on the motors we're talking about the encoders will need cables for
supply power as well. Reverse engineer the sucker, find out how many cables
are used to power the motor itself. I would expect there to be a few more
'extras' for the encoders. The encoder should be quite easy to spot because
it's likely it can be removed to replace it. You could try spinning the
motor up to a few hundred or thousand rpm then attaching your multimeter to
suspect cables. I _THINK_ you won't get any back from the encoder's cables
because you're not supply it with power, the encoder simply measures it does
not generate current. The supply to the motor should show up on the
multimeter with the rotor spinning though. Just an idea.
