Well, I doubt the path to be circular, but in dealing with these problems, I usually find that I have to go preety far back.
For instance, glibc may need kernel-headers-2.2.5. X (I know) needs glibc and various X libs other than that. If you want to do
this, I would reccomend compiling the X packages yourself. You can get them from www.xfree86.org and theu tend to have no
problem compiling (in my experiences.)
