I think the driving force behind printer sized machines is cost. Broken printer = cheap.
Printers have guide rod and bearings as well as stepper motors. The last time I found some
old wide carriage I got both for five dollars. If you just want a cheap machine and all you are
doing is trying the technology this is a ok way to go. The resulting machine wont be ridged
enough to hog out half inch cuts in steal but for routing a PCB or shaping wax and plastic it should work fine.
Go a head try it. If this is a hobby for you all you lose is some time and dead printers that
had been headed for the garbage anyway.
Just my two cents. :-)
