If you don't want to use the GPIB/HPIB/IEEE-488 handshaking protocol,
why waste extra money on a card? Use the printer port, it's fast,
reasonably standard, and the newer protocols are bidirectional. GPIB is
OK if you have intelligent motion controllers, I think there were a few
made, but you can't really deliver timed digital data at high rates
without violating the bus protocol.
