So far Jon's idea of using floppy drive motor is working it has a ring
magnet
in it. I tested the hall sensor on the scope it is making good square waves.
I
don't know if this ring is going to have enough of the north south magnets.
I need
a ring that spaces them 3mm wide example north 3mm, south 3mmm, north 3mm,
south 3mm
and so on. I don't have all the electronics yet and still have to make a pc
board.

To answer your question it takes only 1 hall effect per axis. Costs
approximately
$3.00 to $4.00 each, depends on where you can find them and quantity
ordered.

Can you be more specific as to the number of the hall effect transistor, and
have you managed to get anything working yet.
