mcafee self destructed

I just updated my definition files for viruscan. When trying to run a scan, windows says the program tried to perform an illegal operation. I thought only Bill Gates was allowed to run illegal operations.

So, I got out the original Mcafee CD and reinstalled Viruscan. Then I tried to run the updated definition file. I says my version is not supported.

I never liked Viruscan (crashed my other computer to death). I do not like their obnoxious website and now the software tells me they do not necessarily honor their lifetime update policy.

Can anyone recommend a virus checker that just takes care of infections?

Doug
