please forgive the lack of capital letters and any typographical
errors. i am recoverying from left shoulder surgery and typing
one-handed.

this would depend on if the machine is standalone
and used only for controlling, or if this would
also be the development machine.

have never tried it but in theory you could fit
everything on a 100 megabyte zip drive. this would
be assuming that you would never need swap space.

figure that you could fit everything in 500 megabytes
with a minimal linux system.

figure a small development machine would fit in
2 gigabytes. this would give you plenty of room
for source files.
