My total non-technical understanding of how a VFD works is that it takes the
incoming AC current, converts it to DC and then under the control of a
microprocessor converts it back 3 phase AC at the frequency you have the
unit set for. A VFD does not change the voltage so you have to get on that
matches your input voltage and motor. On all the units I have seen the HP
rating is based upon 3 phase input and you derate the unit by 50% if you are
on 1 phase input.
