These are pretty good motors. I have used some Yaskawa proprietary
motors from Qume daisy printers. I cut the pulley through one side
with a broken-off hacksaw blade. (I may have milled most of the way
down to the shaft first. I drove a large screwdriver into the slot, and
the pulley came off rather easily. I adapted a standard encoder to the
back.

You could turn the back shaft down to fit a HEDS encoder wheel.
